Slovenia – the only country with “love” in its name.

The trendy capital Ljubljana, Mediterranean feeling in Koper, traditional wine cellars in Mariborand beautiful natural landscapes like the Triglav National Parkmake your trip to Slovenia perfect. The small country with only two million inhabitants is more diverse than you think!

Arrival and departure

Start your car trip through Slovenia in Ljubljana. If you arrive by car from the north, we recommend the border crossing at the Karavanke tunnel (near Villach) or the border between Spielfeld (Austria) and Maribor.

Slovenia's capital Ljubljana is centrally located in the middle of the country. Therefore, 1 or 2 day tours to the respective regions are possible. It is also possible to make this trip by bus .

The distance from Airport Ljubljana to the city center is about 25 kilometers. Serious car rental companies are here located. Maribor Airport is not regularly approached.

Hotel

We recommend a central hotel in Ljubljana for your tour in Slovenia. There are many great great accommodations** that you can book via our link.

We recommend Hotel Lev*. The 4-star accommodation is centrally located near the main train station and offers free parking. An alternative is the apartment White House Bela Hiša* just outside the city center.

Places of interest

Ljubljana is the green capital of Slovenia. The city center is closed for car traffic. Exceptions are urban electric vehicles. They drive exhausted tourists to the next spot - for free! Otherwise you can explore the city center comfortably on foot. There is also a dense bus network, and fares are very reasonable.

In the old town you will find an interesting mix of Mediterranean and German influences. Since 1991 Slovenia is an independent country - and Ljubljana shows itself as a self-confident European city.

Ljubljana is also the city of dragons. There is even a Dragon Carnival every winter. The Dragon Bridge was built in 1901 and is one of the first reinforced concrete bridges in Europe. Ljubljana Castle is another highlight. The curtain wall at the top offers the most beautiful view of Ljubljana and its surroundings.

Metelkova is the alternative cultural center of Ljubljana. It used to be an empty barracks complex. It was occupied by artists and activists and is now a place of creativity. Definitely worth a visit!

The Postojna Cave is only half an hour from Ljubljana. The guided visit lasts about 90 minutes and the special thing here is that an underground train takes you through the cave! Once you arrive at the terminus, you can explore the stalactites on your own. Photography is allowed without flash. The cave is home of 175 animal species, one of which is the olm. It is also the cave's landmark. In addition, there is a constant temperature of 10 degrees Celsius, so you should dress accordingly! Just a few kilometers from Postojna Cave, Predjama, the largest cave castle in the world for over 800 years, is a medieval wonder.

Maribor is the second largest city in Slovenia. Also known for its wines. In the Lent district on the banks of the Drava river is the world's oldest vineyard. It is more than 400 years old and was planted when Maribor was besieged by the Turks. And in the Old Vine House probierst du dich durch sämtliche Weinsorten. Am besten nicht auf leeren Magen 😉 Danach kannst du noch durch die wine hills , which are located on the outskirts of the city.

The Lake Bled is a nice place to relax. There is a church in the middle of the lake. For centuries, visitors have been taken to the island by rowing boats. When you have climbed the 99 stone steps, you can ring the church bell yourself. A legend says that your wishes come true! After that you can admire the island from the castle or from the walking paths around the lake.

Nearby is the Vintgar Gorge. The 1600 meter long gorge is characterized by numerous waterfalls and steep rock faces. The entrance fee is 10 euros for adults, but it is definitely worth it. The gorge can be explored only one-way, you have to plan a total of 3-4 hours for the whole tour, because the way back is much longer and leads over the mountains.

Last but not least Slovenia has a small access to the sea. The most beautiful cities on the Adriatic coast in the west of the country are Koper and Portoroz. However, you should not expect a sandy beach here.

Rental car

If you are not travelling by car anyway, we recommend that you get a rental car directly at the airport in Ljubljana. From here you can easily explore all of Slovenia. The best thing is to make an online reservation with a reputable provider. Book your car now under the following link:

Slovenia has many beautiful places. On a round trip you will see how diverse this small country is!
